Sept. 1st was the deadline to join 2021-22 HFH Club. Wow! We are proud that so many students want to give back to their community! This is a record year with almost 200 members!!
It is VERY IMPORTANT that all members join the REMIND so that you get all the information. REMIND is our main form of communication with members. See the info on the DATES/FORMS/SIGNUP tab. Follow the protocol and you will be "approved" to join. IF you are denied, please come see Mrs. Ford to find out why. We ARE planning on building a Habitat house in the spring so keep your fingers crossed that all goes well. With that said, this is our Fundraising time of year. We are currently working on setting up dates for fundraisers and will let you know asap--via REMIND. There will be signups for participation points. HOMECOMING is our first event. Sept 13-17 is homecoming week and the school has fun activities planned. There is a door decorating contest (Roaring 20's theme) and a parade on Friday, plus dress up days for each day next week. Look at the DATES/FORMS/SIGNUP Tab for more info. You MUST have a signed permission slip to walk in the parade (get from the FORMS tab). For the Parade, we meet at Still Elementary at 5:00 to get lined up. Parade starts at 5:45. We will walk from Still to Hillgrove Football field, handing out candy to onlookers. You may earn a point for bringing in a bag of candy, and a point for walking in the parade. Volunteers for door decorating will also earn a point. We are gearing up for a great year! More info on fundraising and community service events coming, so stay tuned and make sure you join the REMIND! Stay Tuned - more info is coming soon!We have a new slate of officers and are looking forward to getting back to normal. Come to our informational meeting on Aug. 11th. 7:45 in the Auditorium or 3:35 in the Library!
For CCSD students, club group activities are still curtailed. At this point in the year, we could not start and finish a build before summer. We are working with NW Metro HFH and may be able to build in the Fall. Conversations with all of our coalition schools, CCSD, and NW Metro HFH will determine a) if we can fund a build, b) if everyone wants to build in fall, and c) if we can do as club groups or if students will have to sign up as individuals (not affiliated with school). Points will carry over from any year we did not get to build, so keep participating as we post opportunities for service or fundraising.
You will have to be a member of Hillgrove HFH in order to build. So keep in mind next school year, our deadline to join may be in August! As always, any questions or ideas, email an adviser or see Mrs. Ford in the library:) 2020 - The year that will be discussed, lamented, and never forgotten.
Since March, we have cried (a little), prayed (a lot), pivoted, and most importantly, unified to change lives for families in our community. With your support and the dedication of our partners and volunteers, this year we built three new homes for deserving families in Cobb County and two homes for Veterans in Douglas County. We repaired six homes for seniors and 22 homes for Veterans, renovated more than 4,700 square feet of community space at Sweetwater Mission in Austell, and partnered with the Warrick Dunn Foundation to completely furnish two homes for two single mothers who became first time homeowners this year. We also raised the walls on our first two-story designed Habitat home in Austell; advocated for, and saw the passage of HB 344, which enables us to save $10,000 annually in property taxes on undeveloped land; and we received a $600,000 community improvement grant to build homes for Veterans in Douglasville. Our part-time skilled workers volunteered more than 2,761 hours to make sure we continued to build. Although our sponsors and volunteers could not safely build alongside our homeowners, they kept our mission alive in other ways through donations for our mortgage relief fund, sewing masks, providing food and sending notes of encouragement. In closing, to quote Maya Angelou, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” Thank you to all of you who shined so brightly for us and the deserving families in our community in 2020. Wishing you and your families the happiest of holidays. Club meetings will continue to be virtual until we hear from the district that we can have our meetings f2f. We are in contact with our affiliate NW Metro Atlanta HFH and will update as we have information about building. As of now, the 'gray ghosts' volunteers at NW Metro have been building. Because most are retired, the consensus at this time is it is not safe for us to build with them. The Cobb HS Coalition very much wants to build when it is deemed safe for everyone. Until then, we will continue to fund raise, educate and advocate for Habitat for Humanity. As you all know, affordable housing in Cobb is an issue. Per our mission when we began, we will continue to serve our community regarding housing and homelessness in other ways. As we hear of community service opportunities, we will offer them on an individual basis (we cannot do anything outside school as a club at this time). Information for Giving Garden, Calvary and other service opportunities are discussed at our meetings and their sign ups are sent out via remind or to your email. Please join us for our January 12th Otter's Spirit night! Order for pick up or eat in. If you have questions, please email [email protected]. We had an informational meeting on Oct. 20th via Zoom to discuss plans for the year.
You can find your new officers and advisers on the 'HOME' tab of this website. Dues are $35 and include a t-shirt. Payments can be made online at MyPaymentsPlus, or contact Mrs. Ford in the library to pay in person (correct change only or check) or to mail in a check. Dues support our club activities and mainly our house build. AFTER you pay dues, join the REMIND for your graduating class. This is how we communicate with you! Please only join once using your first and last names. (other names will be deleted). If you are a previous member and already on REMIND, DO NOT join again as you will get multiple texts. Meetings in November and December continue the 2nd Wednesday of each month virtually via Zoom. Link will be sent via REMIND. Time -TBA. Join with your first and last name. We will only admin members with first and last names. We are still able to do some fundraising and service projects! Our first fundraiser is Nov. 9th from 4-8 at Otter's in the Avenues of West Cobb. Otter's will donate 15% of proceeds of purchases during this time. So, dine in if you are comfortable or pickup food to go! Food delivery service like DoorDash and UberEats do not count for us. Service: we are working on some service opportunities and at this point they may have to be by individual sign up with an organization. We have to check with the district to see if we can offer a HHFH group activity. More info to come. OUR BUILD: Hopefully we can build in Spring. The way builds work is that we (the Cobb HS Coalition) pay $90K to participate. This covers a 9-day build (Saturdays). Each school sends students based on the amount they donate toward the $90,000. Each day allows 30 students on the site, so for example, if we donate $10K to cover a day, we can send 30 students over the 9-week build cycle. Students are given the opportunity for these slots based on HHFH club participation points. Students with the most points for the year are offered slots first, and so on. Keep in mind not every student says yes to a build day, so we then go to the next person on the list. If we build in Spring, we will start with last year's list since we didn't build, and then go forward. Although we will offer a place for the class of 2020, many of those students will not be able to return for a build day. I know this will be a very different year in all aspects but we do look forward to continuing the work of Habitat for Humanity any way we can! ~Mrs. Ford |
