We had a great turn out for our first meetings! The next meeting is Sept. 13 and the deadline to join the club is Sept 14th. Pay dues no later than midnight on Sept. 14th to participate in Habitat for Humanity Club this year.
Once you join, make sure to join our BAND thread so that you get all the reminders and info about our upcoming meetings, events and opportunities to serve your community. Points are awarded for your participation in our events and activities. Members with the most points get the first opportunity to build with us. You may count service hours for participating in our activities for your other service clubs at Hillgrove. Ask any advisor if you have questions. We are off to a great start with lots of visitors to our booth at HawkFest! There is no application to join, pay dues ($40 includes t-shirt) on MyPaymentsPlus. Deadline to join this year is September 13th. A portion of your dues also goes toward our fundraising goal to build a house this year. First meeting for new and returning members is August 9, 2023. Come to one meeting: 7:45AM in the Theatre or 3:35PM in the library. Be on time! We don't want to waste your time, so we start on time! All other meeting dates are posted on the website as well. Pictures of our 2023 House funded by Hillgrove, Campbell, Pope and Walton high schools are below. We raised over $120,000 for this build and sent over 270 student volunteers. Along with the homeowner and the crew from NW Metro Habitat for Humanity affiliate, we completed this house in just 9 weeks. Students work on Saturdays, but the 'ghost' workers and trades work during the week. Our home this year was built for a Cobb County School District Paraprofessional! We only have a couple of build days left! We are not building on Easter weekend, but will resume on April 23 putting on the finishing touches... hanging blinds, putting on door hardware, cabinet knobs, etc. And then, finally, landscape day on April 30th. It's hard to believe in just 9 short weeks we have helped to change someone's life for the better! Since we are partnering with the Lutheran Coalition, they raised the exterior walls on Feb. 26th and we raised the interior walls on March 5th! Our students actually built the walls and raised them, installed hurricane straps, installed windows, and house wrap. They worked alongside our homeowner and students from Walton, Pope, and Campbell. See the slide show! Finally, we are getting to build again! This year, we are building a home for a single mother of three. At our Feb. meeting, students were told about the family. Remember, we don't give away a house. The recipient has to prove they have money in the bank, be employed, can pay the mortgage, go through 100 hours of financial training, AND put in many hours building for others and on his/her own home.
This year, because of the rising cost to build, our build donation amount for the Cobb HS Coalition rose to $120,000! The schools that have remained in the coalition - Campbell, Hillgrove, Pope and Walton- along with NW Metro HFH, agreed that we would partner with the Lutheran Coalition to build our 2022 home in Mableton. With that said, the Cobb HS Coalition will build 6 of the 9 Build Saturdays. Our students are invited to build based on their eligibility established by each club. At Hillgrove, we are on a points-basis. Students earn points by involvement in the club. Students with the highest points are given the first opportunity to build, and then we go down the list. This year, we are limited to 7 students/day for our build days. That gives Hillgrove 47 total volunteer slots on the build. Mrs. Ford has contacted students via Remind. Then she issued an all-call for those interested in case there are more openings. Students must pick up/return paperwork (CCSD Blanket permission form and HFH Waiver of Liability) before considered for the build. Students that are building will be given further information with address, parking info and requirements for the build day. Lunch and water are always provided on build Saturdays. No one should just 'show up' to a build site unless they are scheduled to build. The site is carefully planned and monitored for safety. Too many people on a site create a safety issue. A huge THANK YOU to Longhorn Steakhouse on Dallas Hwy. Eric Dreffin and his crew came in early for us on 12/4 to cook a delicious breakfast! Our student servers were impressive and learned much about restaurant jobs. Our guests were wonderful and gracious. With our ticket sales and donations from the morning, we netted approximately $1500 that will go towards our build. Thank you to our members for collecting 80 pounds of aluminum cans to help our affiliate win a grant! Keep your fingers crossed.
Also, we are thankful that our members donated over 250 items to the Calvary Children's Home food drive. Aluminum Cans Project - Bring bags to Nov. 10 meetingWe are helping our affiliate, NWMetro Atlanta HFH compete for a grant. All of our Cobb HS Coalition schools are collecting aluminum cans. Our affiliate has a chance to win a $2500, $5000, or $10,000 grant and will donate it back to our high school build. So from Sept. 13 to Nov. 10, students should collect aluminum cans at home. At our meeting on November 10th, we will have a truck and trailer to take your bags of cans. Then we take them to the recycling center to be weighed and take our ticket to NWMetro HFH to add to their total. ANY ALUMINUM CANS COUNT! so just bag those cans!
